Col. Matthew Bogdanos and Ms. Bonnie Czegledi will be speaking on Crimes against Culture where they will discuss: "What do terrorism, drugs, big money and violent crime have in common?" Answer: "The illegal business of stolen cultural property--paintings, sculptures, documents and archaeological artifacts. Art theft is not a victimless crime. Entire nations suffer when the evidence of their histories and identities are sold to the highest bidder." 


B. Institute Launch

Launch of The Institute of Art and Cultural Heritage

Date: Friday, April 21/06
Location: Gallery Contempra - 35 Prince Arthur Ave.
Time:  (Reception: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.) 

 

  

        

 

 

 

  The Institute of Art and Cultural Heritage is a non-profit organization dedicated to issues concerning cultural heritage, and the promotion and support of modern art and contemporary artists.

The Institute will be launched with a brief talk by Col. Matthew Bogdanos at Gallery Contempra home of the institute. Col.Bogdanos is a New York City Prosecutor and the US Marine who led the investigation into the looting of the famous Baghdad Museum following the military entry into Iraq in 2003. This event will also be an opportunity for a book signing of Col. Bogdanos’ recent publication Thieves of Baghdad.

C. Gallery Exhibit - Bonnie Czegledi

Date: Month of April, 2006
Location: Gallery Contempra - 35 Prince Arthur Ave.

For the month of April, Gallery Contempra will be exhibiting recent abstract paintings by Ms. Bonnie Czegledi. Located in the historical Alexander Macdonald House at 35 Prince Arthur Avenue, Gallery Contempra is in the heart of the Yorkville Gallery district.

Bonnie Czegledi is a Toronto lawyer, practicing international art and cultural property law; a faculty member and lecturer in the Law and Taxation in the Art Market (LL.M) at the University of Jean Moulin 3, in Lyon, France; and Co-Chair of the International Cultural Property Committee of the Section of International Law and Practice of the American Bar Association (ABA). Her practice is also located in the home of the Institute of Art and Cultural Heritage and Gallery Contempra.  A visual artist as well as a lecturer and lawyer, Ms.Czegledi is dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage and the promotion of contemporary art and artists.
